The Tang Dynasty in China A Golden Era

The Tang Dynasty, following the  Sui  and preceding the Song Dynasty, was a golden age that lasted from 618 to 907 A.D. It is considered the highpoint in Chinese civilization. Under the rule of the Sui Empire, the people suffered wars, forced labor for massive government construction projects, and high taxes. They eventually rebelled, and the Sui dynasty fell in the year 618. The Early Tang Dynasty Amid the chaos of the end of the Sui Dynasty, a powerful general named Li Yuan defeated his rivals; captured the capital city, Chang’an (modern-day Xian); and named himself emperor of the Tang Dynasty empire. He created an efficient bureaucracy, but his reign was short: In 626, his son Li Shimin forced him to step down. Li Shimin became Emperor Taizong and reigned for many years. He expanded China’s rule westward; in time, the area claimed by the Tang reached the Caspian Sea. The Tang empire prospered during Li Shimin’s reign. Situated along the famed  Silk Road trade route, Changan welcomed traders from Korea, Japan, Syria, Arabia, Iran, and Tibet. Li Shimin also put in place a code of law that became a model for later dynasties and even for other countries, including Japan and Korea. China After Li Shimin:  This period is considered the height of the Tang Dynasty. Peace and growth continued after Li Shimin’s death in 649. The empire prospered under stable rule, with increased wealth, growth of cities, and the creation of enduring works of art and literature. It’s believed that Chang’an became the biggest city in the world. The Middle Tang Era: Wars and Dynastic Weakening Civil War:  In 751 and 754, armies of the Nanzhao domain in China won huge battles against Tang armies and gained control of the southern routes of the Silk Road, leading to Southeast Asia and Tibet. Then, in 755, An Lushan, general of a large Tang army, led a rebellion that lasted eight years, seriously undermining the power of the Tang empire.External Attacks:  Also in the mid-750s, the Arabs attacked from the west, defeating a Tang army and gaining control of western Tang lands along with the western Silk Road route. Then the Tibetan empire attacked, taking a large northern area of China and capturing Chang’an in 763. Although Chang’an was recaptured, these wars and land losses left the Tang Dynasty weakened and less able to maintain order throughout China. The End of the Tang Dynasty Reduced in power after the mid-700s wars, the Tang Dynasty was unable to prevent the rise of army leaders and local rulers who no longer pledged their loyalty to the central government. One result was the emergence of a merchant class, which grew more powerful due to the weakening of the government’s control of industry and trade. Ships loaded with merchandise to trade sailed as far as Africa and Arabia. But this did not help to strengthen the Tang government. During the Tang Dynasty’s last 100 years, widespread famine and natural disasters, including massive floods and severe drought, led to the deaths of millions and added to the empire’s decline. Eventually, after a 10-year rebellion, the last Tang ruler was deposed in 907, bringing the Tang Dynasty to a close. The Tang Dynasty’s Legacy The  Tang Dynasty had a major influence on the culture of Asia. This was particularly true in Japan and Korea, which adopted many of the dynasty’s religious, philosophical, architectural, fashion, and literary styles. Among the many contributions to Chinese literature during the Tang Dynasty, the poetry of Du Fu and  Li Bai, considered China’s greatest poets, is remembered and highly regarded to this day. Woodblock printing was invented during the Tang era, helping to spread education and literature throughout the empire and into later eras. Still, another Tang-era invention was an early form of gunpowder, considered one of the most important inventions in pre-modern world history. Answer: Introduction: A leader is a person who ensures creation of a far-fetched vision which all needs to achieve. Thus it enables to motivate and guide the people towards such achievement. Leadership is a quality which leaders should possess so as to enable to drive a group of people or a team towards achievement o a common goal. It is a leader who ensures that all its team members thrive towards one mission and any deviation or fraction which arrives is sorted out by him. There exists a very strong relationship between the traits of a leader, the motives behind the leadership and the effectiveness with which one pursues the role of a leader (Heyi et. al. 2007). A leader should have some basic traits within him so as to guide its team, subordinates, and the colleagues. By traits it is meant how one perceives the other persons qualities with regards him or her to be a good and an effective leader. If we find a person to be confident in his attitude and work performance, then he is considered to be a good leader. So as to ensure that effective leadership traits are present one should try to work as a team, maintain a cordial yet a strict relationship with subordinates where in the leader should be polite and cordial but at the same time he should have the ability to make people work (Dubrin et.al. 2006). All people have leadership traits within them but how effectively one utilizes the same is an art which differentiates good and bad leaders. For becoming an effective leader traits such as confidence in ones own mission and goals of accomplishment, control over the emotional quotient, a good sense of humour, enthusiastic attitude, ability to tolerate frustration, self sufficient, positive outlook, dominating as well as being assertive enough to ensure that the motive is communicated to the subordinates and the other followers in clear terms are some of the sought after traits that leaders should possess so as to ensure that the work they perform is effective. However, depending upon the kind of team a person is leading his traits are developed accordingly. A manager who is leading a sales team needs to be more enthusiastic as compared to a manager who is managing the stock taking team. The intensity of various traits differ according to the kind of work and the group one leads. There is a very close knit relationship between traits, motives and effectiveness of leaders as it is these traits which they have that help in achieving the goals and the motives of the organizations that they lead. Thus these traits have to be explored by the leaders to such an extent which ensures fulfilment of motives in the most efficient manner. Thus the behavioural traits mentioned earlier above are the ones that leaders apply to ensure effectiveness in their tasks (Zaccaro, 2006). Many theories have also confirmed that it is the attributes of ones effective and charismatic personality that helps to achieve motives of an organization in a successful manner. But it is also seen that this relationship does not hold good for every situation. A leader may be good in a particular situation or between specific groups but may not be able to drive a similar force with regards some other team. Behavioural adaption is possible in any circumstance but characteristic adaption is difficult (Musoma, 2006). Amongst the various traits, the emotional intelligence trait is of utmost importance. In todays scenario a successful leader is one who knows how to empathize and not sympathize. Winning over trust of their subordinates is generally very difficult for the bosses. To understand the requirements of the employees and colleagues will enable the leader to communicate in a manner that will have a considerable impact on their minds. If the emotional quotient of the team members are understood and communication is done in accordance then it becomes easy to persuade the team members for performance of work in an efficient manner (Simmons, 2011). The motive of a good leader is not only to ensure performance of tasks on time, but to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner that beats the expectations of people. His motive is to gain appreciation and ensure ethics are maintained at the highest possible level. Their motive to accomplish tasks by overcoming all the possible hindrances is possible only if their leadership traits are explored to an extent which makes them work effectively and confidently (Derue et. al., 2011). The most sought after public figure who is an ideal example for defining this relationship in theory as well as practice is the President of the United States of America- Barack Obama. He as a leader proved that he is one who is born to lead USA for the benefit of the masses and not for his own selfish stances. A good leaders trait is that he should be honest, truthful and reliable. Barack Obama is one such leader who was chosen twice by the people of America. A good leaders trait is one whose character is so strong that he would never compromise on ethical standards (Friedberg, 2008). When he had taken up the president ship of America, the country was fighting the war of the economic disaster which took place in the year 2008. But Barack Obama dint shutter and as a strong effective leader he knew that he had to build up the lost confidence of the people. As a true leader he tried to regain the confidence of the masses. He made a statement in one of his initial speeches which was remarkable Starting today , we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America. A good leader should not be good in his speeches but also should have the ability to ensure conversion of promises. This is what has helped the Americans now to deal with any crisis (Noctor, 2015). A leader can be effective if his thoughts and views are not dominated by any kind of prejudices and Barack Obama has very rightly proven this statement. He has always preferred to be surrounded by people who do not follow the crowd blindly. He has always encouraged views of people and acted in a rational manner before arriving at any conclusion. As a leader one should learn to believe in its ownself. If the leader itself is not sure about his decisions then he will not be able to drive the crowd in his favour. Barack Obama is well known for his capability of taking decisions after due deliberations but once he arrives at a consensus then he believes in it and goes to any extent to defend the same. Until and unless he is proven wrong with the help of acceptable evidences he would not deter from the decision. The notion that leaders always have to be at work is disagreed by the US president Barack Obama. He gives ample time to his family as his motive is that leaders to work successfully need some stress busters as well and for him giving time to family is best method to ensure the same. Thus this also shows his honesty and loyalty towards family. Thus Barack Obamas ability to connect with the people is what makes him the most effective leader who knows what are his motives and motto in life. His leadership skills are phenomenal as a good leader is one who knows how to share credit of his success with his fellow members as well. He understands that no one can work in isolation. Barack Obama knew that America was lacking the leadership of a good President and people found one in him (Rosebush, 2014). The confidence, compassion, patience, clarity in thought process, knowledge base and empathy are some of the traits that Barack Obama has which makes him one of the most effective, efficient and demanding leader. He has never demanded for respect but always commanded the same by virtue of his leadership traits (Scordo, 2013). Thus on a conclusive note, it is very clear the there exists a very transparent linkage between traits, motives and effectiveness of a leader. To be able to become a good leader one should possess certain educational as well as non-educational traits, personal as well as professional traits and at the same time behavioural traits so as to be able to lead a team with full support efficiently and fulfil the motives and aims with ease. When I first saw the book Faust I immediately thought of the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil in return for supernatural powers. This story Im talking about is really dependent on Christianity for its plot. Faust was an educated man who wanted to learn more than God allowed man to know. Faust gains superior knowledge, and enjoys magical powers. But, in the end Faust gets carried down to hell with the devil. Without a doubt this story is a Christian cautionary tale, it warns you that you will lose your soul if you try to outsmart God. This traditional story is a German one. Moreover, there was a real Dr. Faustus who lived in Germany, but examples of his life are unknown, or are impossible to find out. The legend of Faust has been used by Poets, writers, and opera composers. Christopher Marlowes Dr. Faustus was published in the early seventeenth century, and is more in tune with the traditional tale. Goethes Faust, however, differs from the traditional stories. Many critics credit Goethes Faust as opening a whole new era of Western thought. Modern society are wandering aimlessly in a technological world, searching for meaning in life. Western people at the time achieved salvation through religion and Christianity. But Faust achieved his salvation through action. Goethes Faust does not sell his soul to the devil at all he makes a bet with him. An important factor to note is that I am only discussing part I of Faust. The world of the child is often one of intense emotion, confusion, pain and suffering and is a rich source of material for the novelist Having only been alive for about twelve years, the lead characters of Im the King of the Castle and The Go-Between are inexperienced. The intense emotion, confusion, pain and suffering that a child would go through is caused by this. Adults have the advantage over children. They have faced these things before and got through them; the knowledge and experience from childhood that they use to get through bad times as adults is what helps them. Not having such weapons, children react very differently. Im the King of the Castle has a prime example of a boy, Charles Kingshaw, being bullied and not knowing what to do; as this had not happened before, he does not have the experience. Leo, the main character of The Go-Between, is an example of how a pursuit of knowledge can harm a naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve, inexperienced boy. A novel with children in these situations can be very emotional and is thus a rich source of material for the novelist. The similarities that these books hold become apparent very early on. The main character in both are boys and of roughly the same age. Both Leo and Kingshaw have a personality that makes them vulnerable to the bullying which takes place. Romantic, sensitive Leo was easily manipulated into being the go between for Marian and Ted; his imaginative nature meant that he would always wonder what was in the notes, but his ethical beliefs, based on a school boys code which everyone followed, meant he that could not read the notes as they were always sealed. In class and out I had often passed round notes at school. If they were sealed I should not have dreamed of reading them; if they were open I often read them indeed, it was usually the intention of the sender that one should, for they were meant to raise a laugh. Unsealed one could read them, sealed one couldnt: it was as simple as that. Kingshaw was also very imaginative; his encounter with the crow in the field gave him a weakness, which Hopper exploited. His imagination ran wild, terrifying him in the case of the red room and the crow. He thought that the corn might be some kind of crows food store, in which he was seen as an invader. Perhaps this was only the first of a whole battalion of crows, that would rise up and swoop at him. Get on to the grass then, he thought , get on to the grass, thatll be safe, itll go away. He wondered if it has mistaken him for some hostile animal, lurking down in the corn. He was both attracted and repelled by the red room and what it held, as Leo was with the deadly nightshade. I was prepared to dread [the deadly nightshade], but not prepared for the tumult of emotions it aroused in me. In some way it wanted me, I felt, just as I wanted it; and the fancy took me that it wanted me as an ingredient, and would have me. Though Kingshaw had a brief friendship with Fielding, and Leo had Marcus, they were both, to all intents and purposes, alone. Marcus, being ill, gave Leo the chance to start being the postman, and by the time he was well again Leo was too caught up in it. The more I thought about these expeditions in Marcuss company the more impractical did they seem and the less I liked the prospect of them. Nor, though I practised in deceit and an uncritical upholder of the no-sneaking tradition, did I relish the idea of deceiving Marcus not on moral grounds, for any system of ethics, as distinct from the school code, I barely recognised but because I felt it would spoil our relationship. If Marcus had been there the whole time, Leo would not have been able to start taking the letters. The fact that the boys were both in a new, strange environment, Leo visiting some rich friends and Kingshaw having to move in with these strangers as his Mother was hired as the housekeeper, did not help the feeling of being alone. The only person Kingshaw had was his Mother and, in an effort to fit in, his mother sided with Hooper over Kingshaw in most situations even though Kingshaw was innocent. Charles, how can you speak like that, how can you be so naughty? I didnt touch him. Then why ever should Edmund say that you did? I am quite sure he would have no reason to tell an untruth. Oh yes, he would, hes a sneaky little liar, hed say anything. Well I didnt touch him. Oh, what a way to speak! You make me so ashamed of you. In The Go-Between it was the adults, the supposed carers, who were doing the bullying. In a way, it was similar to Im the King of the Castle, as it was not only Hopper bullying Kingshaw, but the adults, too, bullying them into being friends and siding with Hooper. The similarity in the way the boys relate, Leo and Marcus in The Go-Between and Kingshaw and Hooper in Im the King of the Castle, is also different. Both pairs of friends are fighting physically and verbally. However in the case of Marcus and Leo it is in jest; it is the way they relate as friends, although they are almost rivals. Often when we talked there was a spirit of verbal rivalry between us; we trod the knife-edge between affection and falling out; Yet in the case of Kingshaw and Hooper it is meant as harm: Youd better shut the window, Kingshaw said, its my window now. Hooper turned, hearing the new note in his voice, considering what it meant, and hearing the tremor of anxiety, too. He raised his fists and came at Kingshaw. The scrap was brief and wordless and violent. After that first fight, Kingshaw realises he is capable of a violent act. Hooper has brought out violent impulses in Kingshaw that he did not know were there. Leo, however, never reacted violently to the bullying adults. Though both Kingshaw and Leo almost allow the bullying, Leo does not realise they are bullying him into taking the notes so reacts differently. Whereas Hoopers bullying is more obvious, Ted and Marian are more subtle. Leo does what Marian and Ted say because he likes them. He admires Ted as a male role model substituting for his father and he thinks he is in love with Marian. Also Ted exploits his quest for knowledge, especially about spooning, and his inquisitive nature. Well, [Ted] said, Lets make a bargain. Ill tell you all about spooning, but on one condition. I knew what he was going to say, but for forms sake I asked: What is it? That youll go on being our postman. I promised, and as I promised the difficulties in the way seemed to dissolve. Really he neednt have added that final bribe. Kingshaw, however, acted as he did because of his fear of Hooper. However the power did occasionally switched to Kingshaw. When they were in Hang Wood during the storm and when they were climbing the castle, Hooper became afraid, and Kingshaw was the King of the Castle for a little while, but the power always returned to Hooper. Leo never had the upper hand though. He kept taking the notes right to the end. The most obvious technical difference between these two novels is the narrative. The Go-Between is a first person narrative. It is Leo as an old man looking back at his summer in the house. This gives the story a bias as you can only see the thoughts of Leo, giving the reader a sympathy towards him. Im the King of the Castle is, however, in the third person narrative. In this way, it is more neutral. You can see the thoughts of all the characters, and feel a sympathy for each, in a different way. It helps one to understand the characters a little better. Like the opening of the novel where Mr Hooper comes back from visiting his dying father. I am only showing respect now, to behave towards my father as I should because he is dying, because he is almost gone away from me. This helps the reader see that Mr Hooper is a caring man yet is unable to show or act upon his emotions. Because of changing social circumstances, it is harder to understand the thoughts and actions of Leo. It is hard to accept his naivety. In our society, a twelve year old boy would have no difficulty in coming to the conclusion that these secret business notes were in fact love letters but in the 1900s there was no media or social acceptance of discussing personal relationships. Totally ignorant as I was of love affairs, and little as I knew about their conventions, I felt sure that when a girl was engaged to a man she did not write letters to another man calling him darling. She might do it up until the day of engagement, but not after. It was automatic; it was a rule: like leaving the wicket at cricket when you were out; and it scarcely crossed my mind that to comply with it might be painful. However the idea that a twelve year old boy might kill himself as a result of bullying is more believable as this still happens in todays society as it did in the 1950s. Both books have a suicide at the end though in Im the King of the Castle it was the bullied and in The Go-Between it was the bully. Though these books hold some similarities they are also quite different. Though they both present the children in the same way, having similar personalities and experiences, they present those experiences differently. The role of these children also differs; Kingshaw is seen as a victim, and, though Leo is a victim too, in some ways he is almost considered the hero of the novel.

By watching the film Chunhyang, one can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of metonymy. Metonymy is an expression by means of a connection. In the film, Chunhyang and Mongryong exchange gifts – Chunhyang gives him a jade ring and he gives her a mirror. These gifts are little memories of each other. The connection between two individuals is shown through sà ªma. The jade ring is one of the clearest symbols in the movie. Jade represents love in Eastern cultures. It is fitting that the ring is made from jade since the exchange of gifts is a symbol of the love they share for each other. In addition, jade was thought to preserve the body after death and could be found in the tombs of emperors. The jade ring given to Mongryong by Chunhyang is a sà ªma for both definitions of the word; it is a physical symbol of their trust and a physical representation of the tomb of a hero. Mongryong achieves his kleos by becoming a high ranking official and saving Chunhyang’s life. The mirror is another sà ªma. A mirror shows reflection and this reflection is of the memories that were shared between Chunhyang and Mongryong. A person can reflect on past events and build connections between places, objects, and people. The signs that people give to each other are important for recognition and building relationships The importance of sà ªma can be seen in the Odyssey as well: So you see I know all about this sign [sà ªma], and I desire to learn whether it is still there, or whether any one has been removing it by cutting down the olive tree at its roots.

Family has been depicted as one of the most important aspects in a number of films. Notably, many people believe in family as the most useful unifying aspect among various groups. In China, for instance, family is considered to be among the factors that individuals need to hold so dear to them. Various movies have been produced with the aspect of family being given weight in the movies. In addition, the cultural aspect of family has also been seen to be a factor that most individuals consider to be highly imperative in bringing to life the movies in question. This paper seeks to carry out an analytical interpretation of the aspect of family in the film Pushing Hands. In every family, father-to-son relationship is often seen as factor that is quite essential in bringing together the various family members. In addition, when the father and the son are at logger-heads, family unity is at a point of jeopardy and might escalate to highly detrimental scales. Apart from securing a unified family, father to son relationship is always considered a great aspect, especially in Chinese culture. In addition, most parents struggle to ensure that their children do not go against the immortal cultural values that each group is inclined to. Particularly, Chinese parents often want to see their sons embrace the Confucian cultural values even if they are in other countries (Huang, 2000). In line with family relationships between a father and a son, the film Pushing Hands seek to bring to the audience the idea of how westernization has affected family cultural values for the Chinese. Furthermore, the father (Mr. Chu) disagrees with his son Alex on the various family issues and cultural differences between the life in the United States and life in his home town Beijing, China. The film portrays the father son relationship as a cultural factor that should not be taken for granted and as an element that is highly significant in Chinese cultural aspects. As such, the script writer of the film has ensured that the film uses the best characters to bring out the issues of father-son relationship and the elements associated with the cultural differences between those living in the western countries and those living in China. Mr. Chu (Sihung Lung) who is an elderly man has fully devoted the wider portion of his life to the aspect of studying and teaching other learners tai chi in China. As a result of old age and the desire to be closer to his family, he makes up his mind to move in and stay with his son who is in the United States. However, having lived his entire life in Beijing, China, the elderly man finds it hard to cope with the different cultural factors in the United States. On the other hand, his son Alex (Bo Z. Wang) has been living in New York City for quite some time and has partly been affected by western cultural aspects which are totally different from the Chinese way of life and Tai Chi teachings (Hua-feng, 2013).One of the major family challenges that greatly affect the father and the son is the fact that the father arrives in New York without knowing any English word. In addition, the son is highly Americanized that it would be hard for the father to understand him. Besides, Alex has a w ife named Martha (Deb Snyder) who is a writer dealing with the pressure of trying to make sure she publishes her first novel, apart from taking care of her six-year-old kid. Mr. Chu faces the challenge of being totally at odds with a number of American customs and various technological factors. Furthermore, Mr. Chu cannot walk in New York alone as he easily loses his way. Since Mr. Chu is completely dumb on various factors in the American way of life, Martha begins to feel irritated with the fact that she might be taking care of two children. This is because the elderly Mr. Chu has to be taught everything as a child. While staying with his son, Mr. Chu develops a feeling that he has lost his dignity and independence thereby making the relationship between him and the son more challenging. Eventually, the elderly father tries to work things out on his own and look for a job. However, the harder he attempts to fit in the American culture and make New York look like his home, the more unfamiliar he seems to be. The elderly Mr. Chu feels lost in a different culture at a time when his son is feeling at home and has no issues being seen as an Americanized Chinese. The differences in cultural affiliations make the relationship between Mr. Chu and his son extremely difficult (Chan, 2004). The significance of the issues of father to son relationship in a family is highly relevant in the wider cultural context. The complexity in the relationship that is brought by different adaptation techniques to distinct cultures give the audience the most appropriate ways through which culture can be viewed in a wider perspective. The title is highly appropriate as it tries to bring out the facts about pushing an individual to conform to a cultural affiliation that is totally different from their original culture. In the non-aggressive turn of events between the father and the son, it is apparent that cultural fidelity is hard to break, and even if one does break it, it has to take quite a long time. The aspect of cultural conflict is an element that keeps on making various family ties broken hence making it difficult for the individuals involved to foster unity between themselves (Zhang, 2002). In the book From ‘Minority Film’ to â€Å"minority Discourse,’† Screening China, Zhang (2002) asserts that cultural aspects such as ethnicity and race play a major role in ensuring that family ties are kept alive. In addition, he argues that failure to stick to the family ties would lead to cultural conflicts. This cultural conflict is the main element that Master Chu find himself in and creates an internal misunderstanding in his cognitive thoughts. Even though his daughter-in-law totally misunderstood him, making him feel discontent and disgraced, the elderly Chu made sure that his efforts to cope up with American culture were kept alive. When he finally disagrees with his son over alleged mistreatment from the wife, he decides to gracefully have his way and walk out of the house. Consequently, after going his own way, Mr. Chu finds his own niche where he can have no one minding about his inclination to Chinese way of life. In conclusion, family and cultu re have been depicted as some of the most important aspects that need to be considered in learning cultural factors. Depends on the seasonality of tourism, the negative elements influence nat ural, cultural, social and economic environment involve emission from transportation, erosion by building roads connecting landmarks, damages of local natural biodiversity.However, with GIS technology, engineers and experts can analyze the land then come up with better strategically management planning, and gradually minimize the negative impact brought by unregulated tourism. Conclusion As tourism is constituted by numerous complex activities, and all involved in terms of trial, cultural, social and economic environmental demands, thus a powerful tool is really necessary for its sustainability.GIS technology is proven to be one of the successful results for land management and decision making so far. Apart of this, from an engineer's perspective, the spatial and non-spatial data contained by digital map dramatically contribute to effectively managing the land, easing the conflicts and risk, promoting the sustainability of tourism. The Lancaster Treaty Of 1744 The Lancaster treaty took place between June 28 and July 4, 1744 in the old courthouse. it was concluded by Iroquois( the Six Nations) and Maryland and Virginia colonies. The treaty focused on a land dispute between Virginia, Maryland and Iroquois. The dispute was centered on the Shenandoah Valley in Western Virginia where the interests of the populations and the three colonies tended to converge. Pennsylvania took part as an inter mediator with an attempt to play the part of a honest broker. Maryland and Virginia attended because Iroquois had threatened to extract payment forcibly form the frontier settlements which were claimed to have encroached their lands. The discussion between the Iroquois and the Colonial delegates was about the invasion by the Appalachians squatters of the eastern slopes. The Maryland and Virginia delegates did attend because the colonies were claiming the land in dispute. The Maryland and Virginia governors had for a period of two years been requested by the Iroquois to meet concerning the back part lands which they claimed to have aright over them.( James 2008, 45). The Iroquois complained that inhabitants from Maryland and Virginia had settled in their land without their permission. They also claimed that Maryland and Virginia had no right of settling in those land since they had no consent and also had not purchased the land neither. They said that the Six Nations had for a long time never complained about the land and it meant that they had no issue with the possession. The Maryland argued that there was no need to conflict bearing in mind that they were sons of one great king and are as one man and therefore no need to stir up quarrel. They convinced them with sweet words saying that past treaties have always emphasized that they stay like brothers. Through this they further told them that every misunderstanding between them should be done away with in every way through brotherly kindness and misunderstanding. when you spoke about the affair of land yesterday, you went back to old times and told us you had been in pocession of the province of Maryland above one hundred year: but what is one hundred years in comparison to when our claim began?(James 2008, 53). They had brought with them goods such as knives, awls and guns and taught the Iroquois how to use them. This made the Iroquois think they were good people and went ahead and welcomed them telling them to tie their ship to the shore bushes.They further liked them and tied their ship to the trees and seeing that this was not secure enough, they allowed them to tie the ship to the rocks and even to the mountains. It was with time that they started allowing them use their land and resulted being the same people with the Iroquois. They claimed that they conquered several nations including those back of the mountains in Virginia. They told them that what they were experiencing was merely from the fact that they were conquest. They denied the idea that the Great King of England and the people of that colony conquered the Indians who lived there arguing that it was not true. They claimed that what specifically lied beyond the mountains had been conquered by them and that the Virginians have a right to it. The Virginians further said that the mountains are the boundaries between them. They also reminded them of a treaty they held at Albany where they made a fence with the belt of Wampum and said that if any visitors came to the hill they would kill them. They argued that t hat was the same situation they were applying and asked the treaty to be confirmed on that (James 2008, 54-55). They also complained that the Iroquois came and lived to the wrong side of the hill contrary of the agreement and the Virginians never bothered after all they were not in a position to know what the people in the other side were doing. They also said that the Six Nations came and settled along the sides of the road of which they never complained of. They also demanded that the issue of settling along the roads be settled along the grant of the land. That the great river of potowmack and the high ridges which extend all along the frontiers on Virginia to the Westward of the present setlements of that colony, shall be for ever the established between the Indians subject to the Dominions of Virginia and the Indians belkonging and depending on the Five Nations (James 2008, 68). According to page 65 to 66 of the 2008 James edition, the Iroquois said that the Virginians had never possessed land there before. They also said that the treaty of Albany which they know was one made seventy years ago which was made for friendship and treated them as brethren which was by Colonel Henry Coursey.they also said that the other treaty was the Albany of fifty eight years ago in which the people of Virginia gave out their land to their Great King for his protection which was made by Lord Howard. The last treaty they talked about was the one made by Governor Spots wood which they claimed to have failed to recite. This treaty actually prohibited the Virginia to settle to westward of the mountains. They said that as the treaty said before, the Great River of Potomack and the high ridge mountains extending along the frontiers of Virginia shall be the boundaries between Indians and Virginia and the Indians of the Five nations. They said this treaty gave them no authority to wal k on those lands. They said that this is the treaty that they were referring and that it had been sent to their King had no action taken and to add it all some people had copies of the same treaty and still put their claims on the same land. The Virginia said that the Southern Indians also demanded the same land as the Iroquois. The Virginia however told them that they were ready by all means to live as brothers just as before and settle any disputes in a fair and honest way. They told the Six Nations that their complain should be made to the Great King who had the right to remove the people who had intruded. (James 2008, 67). the dispute between Virginia and you is setting up your right aginst the great King under whose grants the people you compalin are settled. Nothing but a command from the Great King can remove them. The three colonies had supporting evidence of how the land in question was theirs. At the end they came in to terms saying that the Connastoge and Sasquahannah indians had a right to sell the lands to the Virginia and Maryland. This is because the lands were theirs at those times but they had been conquered and they belonged to them. They argued that it was by no means that the Iroquois owned them since they have never sold or purchased any land (James 2008, 56). They actually demanded to be told how and when they conquered the Indians. At the end of the treaty, the Iroquois left with presents from both Maryland and Virginia. They were also able to reaffirm the importance of the centrality of the Iroquois confederacy and covenant chain. The Iroquois also at the end of the discussion put marks on two official deeds for the Virginia and the Maryland colonies to signify the extinguishing ownership of the land in dispute. The treaty ended in such a way that both sides were contended and happy of the outcomes (James 2008, 86-87). In conclusion, the treaty of Lancaster 1744 was about settling land disputes between the Virginia, Maryland and the Iroquois. The Pennsylvania was used to take part of an inter mediator and a honest broker. The Virginia claimed the land was theirs majorly because of the treaty of the roads. The Iroquois denied the argument saying that their was a treaty of Albany which gave them no right to settle in their lands. The Virginia further said that it was only the Great King who had authority to displace the people and no other force. The Maryland had settled in the land for over hundred years without any claim. The Iroquois demanded that the Maryland tell them how relevant hundred years was to the dispute in question. The Cosmogonic Cycle in Heart of Darkness  Ã‚   The short novel Heart of Darkness tells a story just like any other heroic myth, except better. This novel rewards an educated reader. Many find the work to be extremely confusing, and actually quite dull. Though it is a complicated book, a reader is stimulated by the symbols and linguistics used by Conrad. The most noticeable is the flaw in the Cosmogony Cycle. This cycle is an integral part of every hero’s journey. An important step in the cycle, the second step in fact, is finding a guide, either spiritual or tangible. If one were to look hard enough in most works of canonical literature, he would find all the necessary components of the Cosmogonic Cycle on the protagonist’s journey, the travel into the underworld, confronting the father figure, meeting, and saving, a female prisoner, then the journey back into the conscious. A guide is there to lead the hero. He generally is a man or woman who has been on a similar journey and knows the pitfalls where the hero may f all. Without this figure in Marlow’s journey, he fell into the temptation of staying in the unconscious "evil" domain. Conrad never gave Marlow a guide, in essence, dooming him to fail his mission. At the beginning of the protagonist’s journey it seemed as though the "two women . . . knitting black wool" (Conrad 13) in the trading center office were there to foreshadow the mortal death of Marlow. One may have drawn this conclusion because this is an obvious reference to the women who knitted while watching aristocrats executed by the guillotine during the French Revolution. I believe it meant something much more deep. A good writer, one of Conrad’s caliber, does not place superfluous scenes, words, or phrases in his or her book. He writes only what he needs to write. With that in mind, because Marlow did not die at the end of his journey, therefore the women then had to represent something else. They foreshadowed the death of Marlow’s soul. They knew he was without a spirit guide because they were aware the Trading Company had not offered him one. They also knew Kurtz hadn’t had a guide either. There were multiple uses of the word soul in the final chapter, many of which talked of the inability for a man’s soul to escape the forest.

It's difficult to hoose because they â€Å"wanna be a part of one world cause it's all shiny and fast but afraid to let go of the other world that's slower and more familiar. â€Å"(pg. 4). This new world, it's fast paced, technologically advanced and overwhelming and it's exceptionally diverse from the peace and calm of life on the reserve. Garnet wants to assimilate to modern society because â€Å"[he] was embarrassed about being an Indian†¦ † (pg. 19) and at various times he was Hawaiian, Polynesian, Mexican orChinese; basically anything other than the â€Å"scary lookin', dirty, drunk, fghtin' in the streets or passed out in the alley'(pg. 22) Indians that his foster father has shown him a while back. The speed of the world is getting faster and faster with the Whitemans inventions and it's hard to differentiate between worlds, the lure of the unknown is great and this modern time is unfamiliar to the ‘born to the land' Indians. Media is, by far, an important source of a lot of our self-education nowadays and we rely on this ermanent source of information to help us learn more about other cultures, beliefs and topics.But it can also be a problematic device as rumours and stereotypical opinions can be spread with a click of the mouse. Back then, books were the major source of information, and when the only books written are by white-men who only are one viewpoint of many in the world, things can get pretty one-sided and it's hard to know what's actually an accurate source of truthful information. Catcher in the Rye Song Project

â€Å"Under the Bridge† – Red Hot Chili Peppers Analysis In this song, the lead singer, Anthony Kiedis, is describing how after a drug addiction he moved to a different city to start a new life. This relates to Holden in Catcher in the Rye because after he was kicked out of school he had a hard decision to make. He either could go to his home before his parents knew about the expulsion, or he could run away to New York. Anthony and Holden both choose to go to the city. Also in the song and the book, the singer and Holden turn to drugs as a way to help their lives. Obviously that is the wrong choice, but anyways Holden, although underage, drinks as a means of an anti-depressant. â€Å"†¦The more depressed I got, and I decided, while I was walking and all, to stop off and have a drink somewhere† (90). This quote shows just one of a couple instances where Holden wants to drink because he is depressed or lonely. Anthony Kiedis, just like Holden, turned to hard drugs because he felt lonely from his family and friends. â€Å"Shake Me Down† – Cage the Elephant Analysis This song is about how the lead singer, Matt Shultz, dealt with the death of his last family member. He talks about how people usually grief and turn to drugs to help deal with someone’s loss. The line â€Å"I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the sun† shows how Matt is being optimistic and trying to make his life better from the death. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden’s brother Allie dies and Holden has a bold reaction to his death. â€Å"I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage† (38-39). Although Holden has a completely different reaction to a family member’s death, this song relates to Holden because it shows the different ways that people deal with a person’s death. Use Somebody† – King’s of Leon Analysis Throughout this song, the writer describes a person that is trying to find somebody to accompany him that has similar personalities. Holden Caulfield throughout the book goes around meeting new people but most of the time he is depressed and lonely. Holden relates to the song’s character because they both need someone in their lives to fix their problems. â€Å"The first thing I did when I got off at Penn Station, I went into this phone booth. I wanted to give somebody a buzz†¦but when I got inside, I couldn’t think of anybody o call† (59). This quote shows how Holden wanted to talk to someone, but anybody he thought of he found a reason not to call him or her. In the song, the singer repeats the same phrase â€Å"You know I could use somebody† to emphasize the need of a friend. Holden is the same in this case, being he needs someone to help him break his negative attributes. â€Å"Express Yourself† – NWA Analysis The main theme in â€Å"Express Yourself† by N. W. A. is to practice what you preach. An important trait to Holden is genuineness and not being a phony, which is why this song relates to him. Many of their other songs such as and â€Å"Straight Outta Compton† and â€Å"F*** Tha Police† were banned from the radio even though they did contain a lot of the truth about their lives and some of the corruption and brutality they faced in their lives. Meanwhile, other artists produced phony music and imitated others. Being â€Å"straight-up† and truthful is something Holden values a lot. â€Å"Or they kill where the hip-hop starts/Forget about the ghetto, and rap for the pop charts. † This line from the song talks about sell-out rappers who make music just for the money and fame. These kinds of people are phonies. Another quote from the song is, â€Å"It's crazy to see people be/what society wants them to be, but not me. † The meaning of this is that other people around him change to make others happy and to fit in, but he won’t. Holden is just like this. His brother D. B. â€Å"sold-out† by moving to Hollywood and being a screenwriter. Holden doesn’t want to follow the same path. â€Å"Basket Case† – Green Day Analysis Green Day’s singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song while he was in a wretched state of emotional distress. Instead of facing his problems, he would resort to drugs and complaining. This song fits in perfectly with how Holden is handling his problems. After being kicked out of a private school in which his mother paid for, he delays telling her until he can get his emotions under control. He goes to New York City and tries to get drunk to relieve his stress, as Billie Joe Armstrong did with drugs. â€Å"Am I just paranoid? Or I'm just stoned. † This song also talks about the constant paranoia he faces. Holden also has to deal with being paranoid as he is clearly insecure. It is rare that the reader will find Holden describing somebody positively. He is constantly making shallow judgments about the people he encounters. This proves his insecurity because he is seeing his imperfections through others and criticizing them for it. â€Å"Unwell† – Matchbox Twenty Analysis This song was written from the point of view of a depressed person, rather than a crazy person. I feel that Holden would fall into the category of a depressed person rather than a crazy person. He states several times that he really is just lonely. He says,  Ã¢â‚¬Å"What I really feel like, though, was committing suicide. I  felt like jumping out the window. †Ã‚  This may contribute to his depression. This type of depression that he has doesn’t stop him from doing what he wants; it just places an ongoing negative mindset, always judging people. He says, â€Å"The worst part was, the jerk had one of those very phony, Ivy League voices, one of those very tired, snobby voices. He sounded just like a girl. He didn’t hesitate to horn in on my date, the bastard. † This shows his rashness towards people he doesn’t really know. He is just immediately generalizing the people around him. â€Å"Seventy Times 7† – Brand New Analysis This song relates to Holden’s interpretation to a lot of the people he sees. He views everyone like the writer of this song does: as shallow, ignorant and mentally weak. The writer says, â€Å"So, is that what you call a getaway? Tell me what you got away with. Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish. I've seen more guts in eleven-year-old kids. † He’s exposing the subtle weaknesses of man, much like Holden does in his thoughts. These lyrics are the kind of assumptions that Holden would make about people before even talking to them. This song also fits the way Holden lives his life, â€Å"Back in school they never taught us what we needed to know, like how to deal with despair, or someone breaking your heart. † These are some of Holden’s biggest problems. His failure in his previous relationships will heavily contribute to his ongoing disparity. Dear Holden Caulfield, Over the years I have known you, I have noticed that your personality has changed for the worse. You have gone from a fantastic brother who I loved hanging out with to a lousy, lonely, and depressed person who I feel separated from. I don’t even know who the hell you are anymore! You’ve become a damn childish brat even though you are what now 16 years old? One of the things I hate the most is you think that everything is crap. Movies, people, and everything! It is all crap! You always accuse people of being phony. What exactly is a phony? Have you ever thought of yourself being a phony? Everything you say is a contradiction. In reality, the people you call phony are just average, friendly people. Using your definition of a phony, your own brother would be a phony because he writes stuff for movies. I almost forgot about your social problems. Now, I can’t really ridicule you for this, but you are a lonely person. You don’t have any friends and make people soak in your own sorrows. We need to get someone for you that fix that problem; I’m not worrying about that now though. Your always depressed too damnit. And that makes everyone around you depressed as well. You always have to ruin everybody’s good time. Everything would be going well then all of a sudden you come along and screw up everything. I have decided to get a little creative with the situation. I made you a CD and sent it to you up in Pency Prep. It is a compilation of songs that describe you as a person. It is filled with songs that describe how you coped with your brother’s death, loneliness, and other qualities you have. The first song I have for you is â€Å"Basket Case† by Green Day. This song describes how someone didn’t face their problems and forgot about them. You do the same exact thing. Instead of facing your parents when you get kicked out of Pency, you run away to the city and put away the issue. This song is related to the next song in a way, which is â€Å"Under the Bridge† by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This song describes the singer turning to drugs to fix his problems, just like you turn to alcohol as an anti-depressant. The singer also shows how he ran off to Los Angeles, just like how you ran off to New York, to â€Å"fix† his problems. Another song I picked for you was â€Å"Unwell† by Matchbox Twenty. The singer in this song tells the listeners he is not crazy but instead just epressed. I felt like that related to you because people may think you have some anger management issues or something, but you’re just extremely depressed and lonely. I also thought that â€Å"Express Yourself† by NWA was an appropriate song for you. This song talks about being true to yourself, and makes fun of people who are fake or phony. Do I ha ve to explain this one? You think everything is phony, I mean seriously, this song is probably your favorite song ever. This next song, â€Å"Shake Me Down† by Cage the Elephant, shows how people deal with someone’s death. During the song the singer talks about people who can’t get over the death, just like you and your mother. You even broke all the windows in the garage because of your anger over your brother’s death! I mean damn, that is a way you could react I guess. Another song I put on the CD was â€Å"Use Somebody† by Kings of Leon. The singer in this song shows the need of a friend in people’s life. You definitely could use a friend. Maybe they can help get rid of your depression and loneliness. The next song I put on there was â€Å"Seventy Times 7† by Brand New. The singer relates to you because both of you have the same outlook on people. that they are ignorant, mentally weak, and phony. This song, â€Å"What’s My Age Again† by Blink-182 is the perfect example of you. The song is about a person that acts nothing like his real age. You act like an immature child even though you are 16. The title even describes you. You say people think you are older than you actually are because of your height, but you are only 16! Another song I put on was â€Å"Prayer of the Refugee† by Rise Against. This song describes a refugee that says he is independent and doesn’t want help but yet people try to help him.
